National Train Day 2013

Two weeks ago we took Mom to Union Station for National Train Day.  I have to say that it was really weird coming to work on a Saturday.  Walking through Union Station where I usually run to catch the train in time.  However, it was very nice being able to share different experiences with my family and showing them where I work.

Here are several pictures from that day.  These are some of the model train cars.  The penguins from Madagascar were our favorite.

One of the train engines.  It was neat seeing all the different mechanics involved

One of the biggest treats of the day was being able to ride the Amtrak Acela train.  They had a special that allowed a 35 minute train ride for $5.00.  Ryan and I felt like first class.  The train cars were incredibly sophisticated.  Beautiful and roomy leather seats, decent foot space and conference tables to name a few.  This was our family pic.  We were fortunate to be able to sit together.

Aren't they adorable?  I love how in love my in-laws are.

Ryan and I enjoying the comfy seats and the view of outside (and each other)

During out trip the car reached 122 miles per hour.  There was one point where it clocked 130 miles per hour.  We made it to New Carrollton (one of the stops on the Marc train) in about 5 minutes which usually takes about 12.  That was so exciting!

This is the Marco Polo, Franklin Roosevelt's personal train car.  I see it from time to time at Union Station and never realized the true history behind it.  This was another big treat being a history lover.

President Roosevelt had some physical handicaps and needed a brass bar next to his bed to assist him to get up in the mornings.  The train has been restored to be in its original state and most of the items have been replaced, except for this bar.  This was the original brass bar that President Roosevelt used when he stayed on this train.  It was so cool knowing that he actually touched this original piece of furniture.  My history fascination.

There were times that President Roosevelt had visitors.  This room was reserved exclusively for Winston Churchill, one of his favorite visitors.

The end of the train.  The caboose was always my favorite car.
