My Editorial on Crutches

Last Monday I fell in the shower snd smashed my toes in the corner of the tub.  They were burning so badly that night, but I tried to be a big girl and not cry.  The following morning I could not bend my toes at all.  Sooo...I went to Patient First before work only to find out that I bruised and sprained the inside of all of my left toes.  They gave me the common walking shoe, elevation, ice, etc., which would have been enough I thought, but NO, they had to add crutches.

Okay, I have NEVER used crutches before so they're giving me a 2-minute lesson before I leave.  I honestly think that they never got the measurements right.  It was quite the adventure getting to work in DC.  The Red Cab Service saw me as I got off the train and put me on the little golf cart and drove me to the front of Union Station.  I always thought it was so nice that they help people,  but never thought it would be me that needed the assistance.

Fortunately, I have a wonderful set of co-workers as one picked me up from the train station to drive me back to work.  It's a ten minute walk, but that seemed forever away.  It was interesting walking around the office.  Those crutches made so much noise.  By this time I'm realizing that they may be too small as I'm already in pain from those darn pads at the top.

I try to leave work and it took 5 minutes just to walk down a short sidewalk.  I think a cab driver saw me, because he asked where I was going and told me to get in and he would drive me.  Wondering if he was a guardian angel?  Unfortunately no golf carts this time so it took about 15 minutes to walk a short 2 min walk to the gate.  I missed my train and had to wait for the next...in pain.  I called Ryan and asked him to wait outside for me when I got to the BWI station.  I was very blessed as he was actually right outside of the train car I was in (oh, nobody would actually give up their seat at first to let me sit down, it was a woman who offered her seat--I love the manners of the majority in DC).  I got off the car and saw Ryan and not sure if I tripped, but I literally fell into his arms.  There was a lady standing next to us who said "what a sweet husband".  She was right, because I didn't want to let go.  He was now my support, not the crutches.

For the rest of that week I had Ryan wrap up my foot in an ace bandage and then put the shoe cast on. This is because I was in so much pain and was incapable of any mobile tasks.  For the next week it hurt to lie down, sit, stand, etc., because of those darn crutches and I only used them for one day.

To anyone who ever needs to use them: you have my full support and sympathy.  I will from this point onward assist anyone that has to use them.  I pray I never have to use them again.  They cause more pain then the pain you had to have them for.  My friends, I now understand the advice that you had given...wrap towels around the "pad".  They should make them with pillows.   Oy!
